Update: 12-01-2009

On December 1, 2009, there was a very productive meeting on our 100 year Anniversary coming up June 24, 2010. Looks like everyone is working hard to put on a great celebration and I think it is only right considering all the history behind this Veterans Center. I have met many great Veterans and some of the best Employees here in Ardmore and not to forget all the great Volunteers. Looks like this is going to be a huge event thanks to our Administrator Gary Robertson and O.D.V.A. Director Martha Spears and many more people. We will have another meeting January 21, 2010 on this event. Rick

MRS. SUZANNE WHITTLE

MRS. SUZANNE WHITTLE, known as Grandma, and probably the oldest white woman in the state, died yesterday morning at the Oklahoma Confederate Home, age 105 years 8 months 13 days. She had been confined to bed for 11 years from a stroke of paralysis. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon in the chapel of Brown and Bridgman’s undertaking establishment. Rev. E. L. AVERETT of the South Ardmore Baptist Church officiated. The body was taken to Utica, Oklahoma for burial, accompanied by her son MARION. In addition to her son, she is survived by her husband, M. C. WHITTLE, age 96, very feeble and an inmate of the home. Mrs. Whittle’s maiden name was SMITH, born in North Carolina. She was twice married, first to ALEXANDER MCLEOD. In 1852 she became the wife of Mr. WHITTLE, both marriage taking place in Macon County, Georgia. She was the mother of nine children. Mrs. Whittle was a woman of beautiful character, and through all the years she was confined to her bed, kept her sunny disposition. She had an unusually bright mind. Although she never had the advantages of education, “that,” she said, “gave her knowledge.”

Web address and redesigned site by Rick Wallace & Corndog Wallace

Rick Wallace Easter Rick Wallace

November 02, 2009 – I started this web site February of 2000 and I have reached close to 30,000 views. I never dreamed that this would catch on like it did and then I got the news that geocities was closing down so I had a choice of dropping this web site or invest money and save all the hard work involved to get this information. My son (CORNDOG) and my mother helped a lot by creating and scanning and I did a lot of driving and talking to a lot of people, I went to many libraries and to the state capital digging for information. I would take vacations looking for this information and spent many hours on the computer. I have a lot of information that I have not finished scanning and newspaper articles from the days that the Oklahoma Confederate Home was going to be built. I will put all of this on this web sight as soon as I am finished scanning. Thanks, Rick Wallace Retired

October 26, 2009 – I have upgraded this web site as of 10-24-2009 through yahoo.com and there will be some changes over the next few weeks to change the looks and make it more modern.  Justin Wallace is doing most of the changes since he is the Web Master of this site. We are trying to get everything ready for the Veterans Centers 100th birthday in 2010. When I first started this web site, I was wanting a personal web site just for me and friends to check out and see what they thought of all the information that I had found but this site has become a lot larger than I ever dreamed and important to people all over the country from all the e-mails that I get. Like I stated up above, we will be upgrading! If any of the other Veterans centers in Oklahoma have a web sight or any information that they would like to share, I am willing to post that information or share a link through this web site since I am retired and have some time to help!
